Troubleshooting Your Slow Computer – Mac and Windows Guide

by | Aug 4, 2025

Dealing with a sluggish computer can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you’re trying to get things done. Whether you’re using a Mac or a Windows PC, there are a few steps you can take to help restore performance and speed.

While there are countless apps that claim to clean and fix your system, the best approach is to stick with the basics and use manufacturer-recommended tools.

But before we dive in…Back Up Everything

Before you get started with any major maintenance or tweaks,  especially something big like reinstalling the OS, it is crucial to back up your data. Don’t assume things are automatically backed up. Take a moment to check that your most recent documents, photos, and other important stuff are stored on an external drive or cloud backup. Personally, I do a full backup to a separate external drive, even if I already have automated backups running.  It’s a small step that can save a lot of regret later.

This guide is split into two parts – Mac and Windows – so you can jump directly to the section that applies to you.

Part 1: Speeding Up a Slow Mac

1. Restart and Free Up Resources

If your Mac hasn’t been restarted in a while, start there. A reboot can clear out temporary files and shut down background processes that might have been slowing you down.

You should also check Activity Monitor to see which apps are hogging memory. Go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and sort by CPU or memory usage to spot the culprits. If an app is using way more resources than expected, consider quitting it.

2. Clean Up Storage

When your hard drive is nearly full, your Mac can slow down dramatically. Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > Storage > Manage to review what’s taking up space. Apple also offers built-in recommendations for optimizing storage.

Remove old downloads, uninstall apps you don’t use, and empty the trash. You can also use free tools like OnyX for simple, safe system cleaning.

3. Reset SMC or PRAM/NVRAM

On Intel Macs, resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and PRAM/NVRAM can help fix odd behaviors or persistent slowness. Apple provides step-by-step instructions for doing this based on your Mac model. If you’re not sure whether your Mac has an Intel or Apple chip, go to Apple Menu > About This Mac.

4. Reinstall macOS (If Necessary)

If you’ve tried everything and your Mac is still crawling, a re-installation of the macOS might be the next move. Make sure your data is backed up before doing this. Reinstalling the OS clears out software clutter and gives your Mac a fresh start.

5. Sell or Give Away Your Mac

If you’re planning to sell, trade in, or recycle your Mac, some preparations are necessary. Sign out of iCloud, erase all content, and reinstall macOS. This ensures none of your personal data stays on the device. Apple has a complete checklist you can follow.

6. Ongoing Maintenance for Mac Users

Regular maintenance helps keep your Mac running smoothly over time. This includes:

  • Keeping your software up to date
  • Avoiding too many login items
  • Cleaning system cache files occasionally
  • Restarting your computer every few days

Part 2: Fixing a Slow Windows PC

1. Restart and Check for Updates

A simple restart can work wonders on a sluggish Windows machine. After that, check for system updates by going to Settings > Windows Update. Updates often contain important performance and security fixes.

2. Disable Startup Programs

Too many apps launching at startup can bog down your system. To manage them:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  • Click the Startup tab
  • Right-click and disable any unnecessary programs

This helps reduce boot time and speeds up performance right away.

3. Free Up Disk Space

Go to Settings > System > Storage and turn on Storage Sense to automatically free up space. You can also use Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files and old system logs.

Don’t forget to empty the Recycle Bin, it often holds gigabytes of forgotten junk.

4. Scan for Malware

Malware or unnecessary background apps can slow things down without you even realizing it. Use Windows Security (formerly Windows Defender) to run a full scan. If you want extra peace of mind, tools like Malwarebytes offer free scans that can catch more stubborn threats.

5. Adjust Visual Effects

Windows 11 (and 10) includes fancy animations that can eat up resources. To turn these off:

  • Right-click Start > System > Advanced System Settings.
  • Under the Performance section, click Settings.
  • Choose Adjust for best performance, or manually uncheck options like “Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing.”

6. Update Drivers and System Settings

Old drivers can be a bottleneck. Visit your manufacturer’s website to find and install the latest versions, especially for graphics and chipset drivers.

Also, check your Power Settings. Set your plan to High Performance if you’re using a desktop or a plugged-in laptop.
