As you may have heard, support for Windows 10 is ending in October 2025.
Since most businesses rely on Microsoft’s operating system, this news caused a bit of concern. This article will guide Windows 10 users through this transition.
What’s the News?
On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will stop providing free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for all devices running Windows 10.
Microsoft is focusing on newer, more secure, and efficient technology. Windows 11 includes comprehensive end-to-end security that provides antivirus, firewall, Internet protection, and more. Read more about Windows security.
What does this Mean?
In the next few months, it is crucial to check all your computers to determine if and how many computers require attention. Computers already running Windows 11 are not impacted by this change.
It is highly advisable to partner with an IT provider to assess your current setup and create a plan based on your needs, budget, and goals. They will also assist in the transition, minimizing downtime and disruption.
Why Take Action?
Business owners cannot ignore this news and need to take action sooner rather than later, or else they will have to deal with:
- Data breaches – An outdated system will have security gaps, making it more susceptible to cyber attacks.
- Compliance Issues – If you’re in a regulated industry, running an unsupported operating system could result in regulatory compliance violations and hefty fines.
- Productivity Disruptions – A higher risk of a cyber attack could bring your business operations to a standstill.
- Compatibility Issues – Newer versions of applications will not be compatible with Windows 10, missing out on features and better functionality.
- Limited Hardware Availability – Parts and accessories for older computer models will become scarce, limiting your ability to fix or upgrade your device.
- Slower Performance – Running a slow system that crashes frequently will lead to costly downtime.
- Higher Maintenance Costs – An outdated, inefficient system requires more IT resources and expenses
Can I keep using my Windows 10 PC?
While your PC will continue to function, we do not recommend using it, since it will become vulnerable to security threats, such as viruses and malware, potentially compromising your business. Moreover, your current applications may become unstable or have compatibility issues.
What are your Options?
While October might seem a ways off, you do not want to be scrambling in the last weeks trying to figure out a solution. Here is what you can do now:
1. Pay for Microsoft’s Windows 10 Security Updates
Microsoft will no longer offer free updates, but you can sign up for a subscription. However, this will only be available for the next three years, and it is very costly. The pricing for businesses will be $61 per device for the first year. Then each subsequent year the price will double. We do not recommend this option for a number of reasons.
2. Upgrade your Windows 10 to Windows 11
Microsoft is offering a FREE upgrade to Windows 11. However, it’s important to note that not all computers can run Windows 11. To determine if your current device meets the Windows 11 requirements, you need to check your processor, RAM capacity, storage, and other technical specifications. This can be done on the PC Health Check app, or, ideally, by your IT service provider.
If your computer is still performing well and can handle the scalability of your operations, the most cost-effective solution is to upgrade to Windows 11.
3. Purchase a New PC
If your computer is older than five years, it is probably slower and less efficient than any new device. Even if you upgrade to Windows 11, its performance might not be up to standard, and it will be nearing the end of its life cycle. You might be saving money now, but in the long run, it will cost you in productivity and downtime.
Similarly, if your system fails the Windows 11 compatibility test, you have to consider purchasing a new PC. While it is a significant investment up front, the newer hardware will run faster, have greater energy efficiency, and include all Windows’ features and security. It will also be under warranty. Investing in new devices may allow growth and innovation, giving your business a competitive advantage.
If you decide to purchase a new PC, make sure to back up your data for a smooth and fail-proof transition. Afterward, be sure to securely dispose of and recycle your old device and any accessories.
